An NVQ (National Vocational Qualification) is a work-based qualification that recognises the skills and knowledge you use in your job. Rather than sitting classroom exams, you show your competence through evidence from the work you already do.

No. Work-based NVQs are designed for people already working in their occupation. Your assessment is built around your workplace, so there is no requirement for traditional classroom study.

Your assessor looks at evidence from your day-to-day work. Depending on the qualification, this can include site observations, photographs of your work, workplace documents and records, and professional discussions.

It varies from person to person. The time it takes depends on the qualification, your experience and how quickly the required evidence can be gathered. We can give you a clearer idea once we understand your role.

It depends on your role and responsibilities. As a general guide, Level 2 suits skilled operatives and tradespeople, Level 3 suits supervisors, Levels 4 and 5 cover lifting operations roles, Level 6 suits site managers and Level 7 is for senior managers. If you are unsure, tell us what you do and we will help you choose.

We can support suitable candidates working outside the UK. Whether overseas assessment is possible depends on the qualification and the evidence available from your workplace, so please get in touch to discuss your situation.

Some construction cards require an appropriate vocational qualification as part of their eligibility criteria. The exact requirements depend on the occupation and card type, so candidates should check the current requirements of the relevant card scheme. Completing an NVQ does not automatically entitle you to a card.
